Dear reader,

My name is Kristel Zaal, I’m from the Netherlands and I’m currently 21 years old. I’m in the third year of the bachelor Psychology and have been an active member of Luna-tik since my first year. I’ve always loved the feeling of being engaged in something besides my studies, and Luna-tik gave me the perfect opportunity for this. During the past year I realized that doing a board year would be the ultimate challenge, so I decided to completely go for it. I am very excited to give everything within my power to make this an inspiring and successful year.

I grew up in Mijdrecht, a small village between Amsterdam and Utrecht. At age 17, directly after my high school graduation, I moved to Maastricht and I haven’t regretted that decision ever since. I initially moved here to start a bachelor in translation but found out quite soon that I did not like it as much as I hoped. Because I didn’t want to ‘give up’, I completed the first year before I quit the studies and figured it was time for the next step. Even though I had a hard time settling in Maastricht, I decided to stay here and look for a job, which I found at a call center. It was quite a strange decision for someone with a serious fear of having phone conversations (especially with strangers), but it ended up being a valuable experience for my shy, awkward self. During the weekends I travelled back and forth to see my parents, who were always happy to see that I didn’t accidentally poison myself with self-made food.

During my gap year I joined the student swimming association, whose members were basically the only people I knew in Maastricht at that time. Luckily, this all changed when I started my bachelor Psychology at Maastricht University. I joined all Luna-tik activities just to meet people and have a good time, but I ended up liking the atmosphere within this group of people so much, that I decided I wanted to give something back. Since then I’ve been active in the Introduction Camp Committee, the Activities Committee, and the Ball committee. I loved the social aspects of being in these committees, but looking back I also notice that I pushed my boundaries and learned that I’m capable of things I didn’t know I was capable of.

Within the board, I’m responsible for all finances of the association, which is of course a huge responsibility, but also a really great opportunity to challenge myself to do the best possible job. I’m really grateful for the trust the old board and members put in us when they elected us as board for the upcoming year, and I’m looking forward to making it a great success.

If you have any questions or would like to have a chat with us, don’t hesitate to come by our desk (floor 0), or Luna-tik room (floor 1)! We’ll be happy to see you.

Have a great year, make yourself proud.
